Taylor Swift Captivates Crowd With Eminem Cover

As if Taylor Swift's sweet persona weren't enough in itself to captivate fans on her current Speak Now tour--the superstar singer has come up with an infectious, simple way to really get each individual crowd pumping.

Swift's been paying homage to hometown music in each city she visits, covering hits by star artists from the area. It's a great idea, as evidenced by the appreciative screams from the audience each time she does it. So far, she's paid respect to Springsteen and Bon Jovi in Jersey, and Alanis Morissette and Justin Bieber in Toronto--but our favorite to date is her tribute in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 28.

If you're not familiar with Grand Rapids, it's the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit. Who's from Detroit? Oh, just some dude named Eminem, that's all.

Green Day - 21 Guns HD 720p Official Music Video with subtitle lyrics

Do you know what's worth fighting for?
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating?

Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky, you and I

When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul

Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last
You're in ruins

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky, you and I

Did you try to live on your own
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone?

When it's time to live and let die
And you can't get another try
Something inside this heart has died
You're in ruins

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky, you and I

But even without Kristen on board, there's still a whole lotta Stewart in this movie! Kim Kardashian, for suing Old Navy and alleging the company’s use of a Kim Kardashian doppleganger violates her “publicity rights.” The celebutante, who is famous for being famous but does not claim any talent other than fame, believes the use of Melissa Molinaro is a deliberate attempt to cash in on Kardashian’s looks and that the model is nothing but a stand-in for her more famous lookalike.

Us Weekly reports that Anthony wanted to select Lopez's wardrobe last year during a photo shoot for her Style Icon Of The Decade spread.

Anthony urged the magazine not to use a photo of Lopez he considered to be "too sexy and unbecoming for a 40-year-old mother of two," an unnamed source told Us.
"He would make her feel terrible about herself if she wanted to wear something sexy," added another source. "He likes her to dress in a demure, ‘wife' style. He hated the fact that she was a sex symbol."

Marc was described as generally being "very dominating" by yet another insider. "He wants to control everything Jennifer does."
A spokesperson for Anthony did not respond to Yahoo! by press time.

Sarah Jessica Parker Tied for Highest-Paid Actress List on Top Spot

Sarah Jessica Parker hasn't been in too many movies lately.but Yet the latest Forbes list of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood has Parker tied as for on the top spot.In According to Forbes thats, the "Sex and the City" star made $30 million in the last 12 months alone, although she hasn't been seen on screen since "Sex and the City 2" was released last May. But being in those movies, and even hit movies, doesn't count for everything on Forbes'list.

Parker shares the top earner spot with Angelina Jolie, but while Jolie has appeared in severalfilm recently, most of Parker's earning came from reruns of the Television show and her lines of perfume and clothes. Jolie had a summer hit of her own last year with the movies  "Salt," and a winter bomb with "The Tourist" months later.

Parker is starring in "I Don't Know How She Does It," due out this fall 0f, and she will also appear in the ensemble holiday movie "New Year's Eve." Could there be "Sex and the City 3" in her future?
Several other actresses on Forbes' chart have also overcome recent flops, like Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Julia Roberts and Katherine Heigl. Aniston made $28 million last year with no small help from the "Friends" franchise, while Witherspoon made the same despite mixed performances from "How Do You Know" and "Water for Elephants." Roberts is enduring a flop at the moment with "Larry Crowne," and Heigl has gone through a string of critically panned comedies since "Knocked Up."

But due to these actresses' star power, upfront paychecks, side projects and residuals, they are easily among the wealthiest females in the business. Pundits like to complain that no one is bankable, at least at the box office, yet these women find ways to rake it in anyway.

Not everyone on in the Forbes list has had to overcome disappointing movies: Kristen Stewart is still riding high from the movies "Twilight" series, Cameron Diaz is trying to turn "Bad Teacher" into a sleeper hit, Sandra Bullock has an Oscar, and Meryl Streep has become box-office gold over the years.

Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston Walks on the Wild Side..

Jennifer Aniston has made a name for herself by playing the sweet but put-upon Rachel in "Friends" and her good-girl leads in a string of poorly reviewed romantic comedies sceane.

In her new movie, "Horrible Bosses," she plays a character that’s anything but sweet.here is her character, a foul-mouthed dentist named Dr. Julie Harris, parades around in lingerie and sexually blackmails her hapless assistant Dale (Charlie Day).

Aniston acknowledges that the role is a departure. "I don’t want to play it safe all the time. I just wanted to take a risk," she told the Chicago Sun Times.

She even dyed her trademark blonde locks brunette, much to the consternation of the studios. But for Aniston, the change of hair color was essential for the part: If she was going to go dark, so was her hair.
"There was just no way I could be saying those [raunchy] words and not look somewhat different,” says Aniston."Horrible Bosses" might be a part of a large shift in Aniston's career and life. For much of the last decade, Aniston’s had the sympathy of tabloid readers everywhere for being dumped, by her ex-husband Brad Pitt, for the dauntingly sexy Angelina Jolie.

Now she finds herself in a similar situation as her former romantic foe: The press had a field day when Aniston was seen getting cozy with her new beau, actor and screenwriter Justin Theroux, right around the same time he abruptly broke up with his longtime girlfriend, costume designer Heidi Bivens.

By all accounts, the couple is getting serious. The two have been seen around Los Angeles sporting matching rings, though they are not engagement rings, as their PR people were quick to note. The Los Angeles Times even reports that Aniston is considering taking a hiatus from acting to write a script with her new man.

Theroux is also a departure for Aniston. With his tattoos and penance for indie flicks and facial hair, Theroux is much more of a hipster than her previous, clean-cut lovers, like Vince Vaughn.
This might have inspired Aniston to walk on the wild side herself. She recently commemorated her recently deceased Welsh corgi-terrier by getting the dog's name, Norman, tattooed on her foot.
With a new man, a new tattoo, and a bawdy new movie under her belt, Aniston, clearly, is no longer content with just being sweet.

Lindsay Lohan avoids jail, but judge bans parties during house arrest.

Lindsay Lohan's failed alcohol test last week will not be held against on her because judge didn't renew a requirement that she be tested, according to the ruling in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The requirements that her supervised probation include the random alcohol and drug testing expired in February when she was arrested on a necklace theft charge and transferred from a Beverly Hills court to the Los Angeles airport branch, Judge Stephanie Saunter said that,
"Lindsay has done nothing wrong," defense attorney Shawn Holley said after the hearing.

Contrary to what the judge and the probation officer believed until Thursday, it was not against Lohan's probation rules to drink and she did not have to submit to tests, Saunter ruled.

Lohan waited no time show she was happy with her court appearance. "Thank you to all of my fans for your support. Sending you Love and Light. xo," she wrote in a Twitter posting an hour after leaving the courthouse.

The judge told Lohan she was guilty of "extremely poor judgment" by having roof parties while on home confinement, "but poor judgment is not a violation of your probation."

Lohan failed an alcohol test administered by a probation officer last week and was ordered to go before the judge for a probation violation hearing Thursday morning. But Lohan's attorney convinced the judge the testing requirement had lapsed in February.

lohan said "I am not happy about house arrest," Saunter said Thursday. "It was not my sentence."

The judge said she was on vacation when she saw media reports this month showing Lohan socializing on the roof of her luxury home in recent days.

"You are not to have parties," Saunter said. "I am ordering it. You can have a one friend at this time. Thats it."

The actress, who turns 25 on July 2, has managed to avoid more than a few days in jail despite two drunken-driving convictions, a long list of probation violations and the recent theft conviction.

U.S. president Obama, ordering drawdown of surged U.S. forces in Afghanistan, urges nation-building at home

President Barack Obama, in a widely anticipated speech tonight, announced a brisk drawdown of 33,000 U.S. forces from Afghanistan by the end of next summer sation, and called more broadly for the U.S. to assume a more pragmatic approach to international interventions in order to focus on economic recovery and nation-building at home.

"We are a nation whose strength abroad has been anchored in an opportunity for our citizens at home," Obama said that in the brief twelve minute speech from the White House East Room. "Over the last decade, we have spent a trillion dollars on war, at a time of rising debt and hard economic times. Now, we must invest in America's greatest resource — our people."

"America, it is proper time to focus on nation building here at home," he said.

The United States had achieved significant progress in the counterterrorism goals Obama outlined when he ordered the surge of U.S. forces to Afghanistan in a speech at West Point in December 2009, he said. Among those goals: reversing Taliban gains in Afghanistan, degrading Al Qaeda's capabilities and eliminating several of its commanders in Pakistan, and building up the Afghan security forces to eventually be able to secure their own country.

Obama's decision to withdraw all of the surged forces by next summer was on the more far-reaching end of the range of options his national security advisers considered, senior administration officials described in a call with journalists this afternoon. Pentagon officials, including the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan Gen. David Petraeus, had advocated for a less rapid drawdown, national security hands indicated. Petraeus, who Obama has nominated to head the CIA, is due to leave Afghanistan later this summer.

The steeper drawdown decision comes as a new poll shows for first time that a majority of Americans want U.S. forces to be brought home from Afghanistan, and as lawmakers in both parties are expressing growing impatience with the expense of the war.

But some national security experts said Obama risked jeopardizing advances against the Taliban achieved with the troop-intensive counterinsurgency strategy Petraeus had championed.

"The President's plan strikes me as solid in concept but a bit rushed," said the Brookings Institutions' Michael O'Hanlon. "Ideally next year's drawdown would have until the end of the year or until early 2013 so the U.S. troops could successfully conclude the fighting season."

"A president is supposed to get the best advice from his generals and then make up his own mind. That is what we have presidents for," said Heather Hurlburt, a former Clinton administration official who now serves as executive director of the progressive National Security Network. "But it's very difficult: the president has to listen to the advice of the generals, [but also] to the level of fatigue of the American people [with the war], and a whole lot of other things.

La Toya Jackson writes the new book 'Starting Over' about Michael Jackson's death.

The books from various Jackson family members are starting to emerge. La Toya Jackson is first with "Starting Over," which is scheduled to hit bookshelves June 21, two years after brother Michael Jackson's death - coincidentally, that is a major subject of the book.
According to the AP, La Toya says in the new work that she spoke with her niece Paris, who said that in the days before Michael's death, he was "always cold" and would "always cry." La Toya also writes about her confrontation with Dr. Conrad Murray in the hospital, where he was evasive and made excuses.

La Toya also says that MIchael's bedroom was found "torn to pieces" following his death and that she found notes she also says were written by Michael where he says he has to "get these people out of my life."

Finally, La Toya writes that she  has talked with many other friends and family who were suspicious of Michael's final days and how he died. This second memoir from La Toya shares a title with her unreleased 2003 album, "Startin' Over," and to coincide with the book's release, an EP called "Starting Over" will be released as well, followed by another single a month later and the full-length album by year's end.
Jermaine Jackson, another brother in the family, has a book coming out in September.

Titanic II sinks on maiden voyage, lives up to its name

Mark Wilkinson's second-hand boat, which he rechristened as the Titanic II, behaved on its maiden voyage exactly as one might expect from a vessel with that name.
Mr. Wilkinson towed the 16-foot cabin cruiser, which he had just purchased for about $1,600, from his home in Birmingham, England, and set out on a fishing trip from West Bay harbor in Dorset on Saturday morning. On his way back, as the Titanic II made its way into the harbor and ... well, you can pretty much see this one coming

Is this another keen marketing campaign from Paramount for TITANIC’s 3D release?!  Not really.  It’s all just a little bit of history repeating.  Most people would have thought twice about buying a ship named the “Titanic II” but not Mark Wilkinson. Oh, no!  According to Yahoo News, the 44-year-old owner of the 16-foot cabin cruiser found himself clinging to the side of the boat as it slowly sank into the harbor.
I’m sure that when he left the harbor, Wilkinson felt like “the king of the world,” but not so much upon re-entry.That’s when the boat began to sink.  Amusingly enough, it was following a successful fishing trip.It was the vessel’s maiden voyage, though Wilkinson had bought the boat second hand, costing him a cool £1,000 (about $1,640).
“It’s all a bit embarrassing – I’m fed up with people asking me if I hit an iceberg,” he told the Sun.
Wilkinson even had to be rescued by the coast guard.  A large hole had opened up in the fiberglass hull as the ship came to dock in West Bay, Dorset in Great Britain.  April 15, 2012 will mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Titanic, a disaster that claimed 1,517 lives.

Shape-shifting robots, a nerdy guy and a bombshell is a movie formula that Megan Fox never got comfortable with - according to her former "Transformers" co-star, Shia LaBeouf.

"Megan developed this Spice Girl strength, this woman-empowerment  that made her feel awkward about her involvement with Michael [Bay], who some people think is a very lascivious filmmaker, the way he films women," the "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" star told The Los Angeles Times Hero Complex blog.

PLAY IT NOW: 2011 CinemaCon: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Talks about  ‘Transformers 3’

"Mike films women in a way that appeals to a 16-year-old sexuality. It's summer. It's Michael's style. And I think [Fox] never got comfortable with it.
This is a girl who was taken from complete obscurity and placed in a sex-driven role in front of the whole world and told she was the sexiest woman in America. And she had a hard time accepting it," Shia continued. "When Mike would ask her to do specific things, there was no time for fluffy talk. We're on the run. And the one thing Mike lacks is tact. There's no time for, 'I would like you to just arch your back 70 degrees.'"
However, Megan's replacement, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley -- who was recently named #1 on Maxim's annual Hot 100 List -- felt more at ease embracing her blockbuster eye candy status.

"Rosie comes with this Victoria's Secret background, and she's comfortable with it," Shia told Hero Complex. "So, she can get down with Mike's way of working and it makes the whole set vibe very different."

Back in April shortly after wrapping production on the film, Access Hollywood's Billy Bush caught up with Rosie at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where the bombshell talked about her whatever-it-takes approach, whether on the runway or the movie set.

"I've always have the same attitude with work. I like to go to work, I like to work really hard, I like to give everything my all. I like to try things that are new, so I'm just really thankful for this opportunity," she said at the time.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, it was announced in May 2010 that Megan would not star in the third "Transformers" movie. At the time her rep told Access, "It was her decision not to return."

French Open: Roger Federer ends Novak Djokovic run to reach final

Federer is through to his fifth French Open final in six years:
Federer came out with all guns blazing, breaking Djokovic in the first game, but the Serb hit back immediately to level.

At this stage, the standard of play from both men was breathtaking, with the pair of them going toe to toe from the back of the court and producing some rallies of remarkable power and intensity.
Federer was also trying to find some variety in his play, however, deliberately bringing Djokovic into the net and and it was a strategy that brought him some success.

Djokovic applauded one pin-point Federer volley as the pair exchanged further breaks to remain level but it was the second seed who forced the first set-points at 5-4, which the 2009 champion saved with some stunning forehands.
They were only separated in a tie-break which, to the delight of the crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier, Federer took when Djokovic flopped a forehand into the net.

Federer piled on the pressure in the second set, continuing to attack with his returns while serving solidly to move 4-1 up.

Still Djokovic battled on, saving five set points on his own serve at 5-2 and forcing a break-back point of his own in the next game before finally conceding it with another backhand into the net.

Federer had never lost any of the 174 Grand Slam matches where he had taken the first two sets but he did not have things all his own way on this occasion.

Djokovic broke at the start of the third set and continued to improve, looking more like the invincible player he has been for the last six months.

The fourth set remained in the balance until the ninth game, when a shanked Federer forehand saw Djokovic break and serve to level the match, but Federer steadied himself to reply immediately.

Both players survived some tense moments to take it to another tie-break, where Federer secured a crucial mini-break to move 4-3 up and consolidated it with two thumping serves.

With darkness falling at 9.37pm local time in Paris, Djokovic saved both match points on his own serve but an ace by Federer, his 18th of the match, saw him triumph.

In Chaina Computer hackers broke into Google email system. But Gov't says no official email hacked; investigate FBI

The WASHINGTON – The FBI is investigating allegations that computer hackers in China broke into google's email system, but no official government email accounts have been compromised, the Obama administration said on Thursday.

"These allegations are very serious," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told reporters. "We take them seriously. We are looking into them." She had no comment on reports of China's involvement.

Google said Wednesday that personal Gmail accounts of several hundred people, including senior U.S. government officials, military personnel and political activists, had been exposed. Google traced the origin of the attacks to Jinan, China, the home city of a military vocational school whose computers were linked to a more sophisticated assault on google system 17 months ago. The two attacks are not believed to be linked.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the Obama administration doesn't restrict government employees from using personal Gmail accounts, but does direct workers to use government email for official business. He had no comment on who in the administration may have been affected by the hacking.

Clinton said attacks such as the one alleged by Google were a prime reason the State Department has for the first time created a cyber-security coordinator. "We know this is going to be a continuing problem and therefore we want to be as prepared as possible to deal with these matters when they do come to our attention," she said.

The Pentagon said Thursday it had little information since the reported breaches involved personal accounts rather than government email. And since the accounts were not official, the U.S. Department of Defense didn't know whether defense employees were among the targeted individuals, the statement said.

A day after Google exposed the breach, China denied on Thursday that it supports hacking and said it is part of global efforts to combat computer security threats.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters that hacking was a global problem and Chinese networks had also been targeted by hackers, but he gave no specifics. He said China was working to crack down on the problem, but he didn't respond when asked whether it would investigate this specific incident.

"Allegations that the Chinese government supports hacking activities are completely unfounded and made with ulterior motives," Hong said.

Google said all of the hacking victims have been notified and their accounts have been secured.

The hackers appeared to rely on tactics commonly used to fool people into believing they are dealing with someone they know or a company that they trust. Once these "phishing" expeditions get the information needed to break into an email account, the access can be used to send messages that dupe other victims.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which has a hand in regulating the Internet, referred questions about the allegations to another regulatory agency, the State Council Information Office, which did not respond.

The intrusion last year targeted Google's own security systems and triggered a high-profile battle with China's Communist government over online censorship.

Bradley Cooper Speaking Fluent French Causes Women of the Internet to Swoon

Yesterday afternoon, a clip started making the rounds of Bradley Cooper promoting "The Hangover Part II," which is called (apparently, in English, which is the strangest part about it), "Very Bad Trip 2" in France, in an interview on French TV. Thing was, he he didn't just do the interview in French, but in what appears to be fluent French, and for some reason this made a lot of ladies (and possibly also gay men) like him even more than they already did.

"Why Is This Video of Bradley Cooper Speaking French Kind of Turning Us On?" asked Jezebel. "This Might Be Bradley Cooper's Sexiest Interview Yet," noted the Today Show's blog. And almost everyone mentioning it on Twitter is saying something about it being "sexy" or making them "swoon." (Literally: Go check for yourself!)
In case you missed it, here it is. I don't know why it's sexy (the novelty? The fact that Bradley Cooper has, even with his creator-endowed hotness, found the time to teach himself another language, and a Romance one at that?), but it is:

The big Automobile Company TOYOTA targets 90% output in June

Toyota Motors has said its production in Japan is likely to return back to normal levels faster-than-expected.
The company's spokesperson Paul Nolasco told the BBC that output at its domestic factories is expected to recover to 90% of pre-quake levels as early as this month.
Last week, Toyota had reported a 74.5% plunge in production at its Japanese factories in April.
Toyota is the world's biggest car manufacturer.
Production at Japan's car manufacturers has been hit hard due to disruptions in the country's supply chain in wake of the 11 March earthquake and tsunami.
However, the company said the situation had been gradually improving.
"We have had a constant recovery in our supply chain and that is starting to have a positive effect on our production," Mr Nolasco said.
'Extremely committed'

Toyota said the speed at which the company's production is recovering was a result of the combined effort of the firm and its suppliers.
"The key behind all of this has been the extremely committed effort by our suppliers to get back on track," Mr Nolasco said.
"After the quake we were facing a shortage of almost 500 parts, the numbers have since decreased to 30 parts or may be even less right now," he added.
Toyota said that it had also sent workers from its own factories to help its part suppliers get back to normal production.
The company said that while the recovery had been fast, there was still work to be done.
"Ninety percent is not the end game, there is still room for improvement," Mr Nolasco said.
"We still have to reach full capacity and also have to take care of our overseas production," he added.

To decriminalize drugs The Global leaders call for a major shift

A slew of big-name former politicians are endorsing a report that says the war on drugs is not working and that drug enforcement policy needs to fundamentally change. The Global Commission on Drug Policy will urge a "paradigm shift" that emphasizes public health over criminalization tomorrow at a meeting in New York City, The Guardian reports.
Those backing the report include former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and former Fed Chair Paul Volcker. Former elected leaders of Greece, Brazil and Colombia have also signed on. See the full list of backers here.
"What we have here is the greatest collection thus far of ex-presidents and prime ministers calling very clearly for decriminalization and experiments with legal regulation," Danny Kushlick, spokesman for the drug policy center Transform, told the Guardian. "It will be a watershed moment."
But, faced with the list of "formers" backing the new recommendation, The Lookout couldn't help but wonder: Where are all the current office-holders who think the drug war has been a failure?
Tom Angell, spokesman for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, a group of former and current police officers against the criminalization of drugs, tells The Lookout he thinks sitting politicians will have to change their tune as American public opinion changes.
"I think as this debate continues to heat up and move forward you'll start to see more and more sitting elected officials endorsing fundamental reforms," he says. Even among LEAP's membership, most are retired law enforcement officers. Only a "handful" are active-duty cops, Angell says, in part because it's difficult for police officers to question the value of laws that they risk their lives to enforce every day.
Despite the political pitfalls of challenging drug policy, a few recent signs point to something of a bipartisan consensus forming on the issue. In April, an NAACP report that said states send too many young people to jail for non-violent drug offenses picked up surprising endorsements from former GOP Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist, the conservative activist who founded Americans for Tax Reform. The report said more than a quarter of the 2.3 million American prisoners are jailed for drug offenses, which bloats the system and eats up tax dollars. Christian talk show host Pat Robertson caused a stir in December when he endorsed on "The 700 Club" faith-based rehabilitation programs instead of jail time for drug use, and even appeared to support the legalization of marijuana. "I'm not exactly for the use of drugs, don't get me wrong," he said. "I just believe that criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of a few ounces of pot--that kind of thing--it's costing us a fortune and it's ruining young people."
Public opinion polls show support is growing among Americans to legalize marijuana, but a majority still think the drug should be illegal. A greater share of Independents support its legalization than Democrats or Republicans.
The U.S. government has sent $1.4 billion in aid to Mexico and Central America to help fight the bloody war against the drug cartels. More than 35,000 people have died over the past four years in the drug-related violence. Drug cartels have turned to the use of narco-submarines and ultra-light aircraft to get their product to the U.S. market, in an effort to foil increased enforcement measures.

The biggest hollywood comedy flims 'The Hangover Part II' of all time at $118.1 million

Shattering numerous records, Warner Bros.’ The Hangover Part II grossed $118.1 million in its first four days to help fuel the best Memorial Day weekend in history at the domestic box office. The sequel is expected to gross another $20 million on Monday for a staggering five-day bow of $138.1 million, setting a new benchmark for comedies.

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount’s Kung Fu Panda 2 also contributed to the boom, grossing $62.4 million in its first four days (like Hangover, Panda opened on Thursday). The 3D toon should end Monday with a five-day total of $68.2 million.

Kung Fu Panda impressed overseas, where it grossed a mighty $57 million from 8,023 markets in only 11 territories. In seven territories, it scored the best opening ever for an animated title and in China, scored the biggest opening of all time for a foreign film in grossing $18.5 million.

Hangover’s foreign numbers weren’t immediately available.

In the U.S., the specialty business also soared, thanks to Woody Allen ’s holdover Midnight in Paris and new entry The Tree of Life, from Terrence Malick .

Tree of Life, grossing $352,320 for the weekend proper as it opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, posted a per location average of $88,080—an all-time high for a Fox Searchlight title.

Midnight—which debuted last weekend to a per location average of $99,834—grossed $1.9 million as it expanded into a total of 58 theaters for a 10-day cume of $2.8 million, according to Rentrak.

The overall uptick in theater traffic at the domestic box office was a welcome respite for the film business, which has suffered one of the worst box slumps in history. Grosses for Memorial Day weekend are  projected to reach $270 million, easily surpassing the $254 million earned in 2007.

From Todd Phillips, Hangover grabbed the best opening ever for a comedy, besting the $85.7 million earned by Bruce Almighty  over Memorial Day weekend in 2003, as well as the biggest Saturday ever for a comedy ($29.7 million).

Hangover and Universal’s Bridesmaids set new benchmarks for the playing power of R-rated comedies. Even with competition from Hangover, Bridesmaids held well over the weekend, declining only 27% to an estimated $16.4 million to place No. 4. On Monday, Bridesmaids is expected to earn another $4.4 million for a domestic cume of $89.4 million.

Hangover should grab the largest five-day opening ever for any R-rated pic, comedy or otherwise. Previous best was The Matrix Reloaded ($134.3 million) and The Passion of the Christ ($125.2 million).

Hangover is a sizeable victory for Warners and co-financing partner Legendary Pictures, and delivered the studio its best Memorial Weekend ever (Terminator Salvation was the previous crown holder at $65.3 million).

“This blows everything out of the water. It’s pretty amazing stuff,” Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said. “Moviegoers love all the characters, and they love the story.”

Hangover is the first title in months to appeal heavily to younger moviegoers, who represented 54% of the audience.

Moviegoers delivered rave reviews for both Hangover and Kung Fu Panda, which drew an A- CinemaScore and A CinemaScore, respectively.

Families turned out in force for Kung Fu Panda, which return Jack Black , Angelina Jolie , Jackie Chan , Dustin Hoffman , Seth Rogen and Lucy Liu return to lead the voice cast. About 45% of the total gross came 3D screens. If the toon had played in Imax, 3D grosses would have likely repped 55% of the total.

“We’re thrilled to have Kung Fu Panda be part of this record-breaking weekend. We came in at high end of expectations. We played very strong to families and kids, who made up 60% of our audience,” DreamWorks Animation president of marketing Anne Globe said.

The original Kung Fu Panda debuted to $60.2 million in early June 2008 at the domestic box office on its way to cuming $215.4 million.

Coming in third at the domestic box office was Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which grossed $39.3 for the three-day weekend and is projected to earn $50 million through Monday. That will bring the film’s domestic cume to $163.7 million.

Overseas, Pirates continued to thrive, grossing an estimated $122.9 million for the three-day weekend. By Monday, the tentpole’s global cume will be $646.5 million, by far the best showing of the year.
